AI vs human content: what wins in B2B (and how to choose)

Copy for AI

In B2B this is not a contest with a single winner. AI wins on speed and volume, a human wins on experience, opinion and original insights. The short version: let AI handle the time-consuming steps (summarising research, outlining, first draft) and keep a human at the controls for facts, your own insight and your brand voice. Put your AI content on autopilot and you fill the web with generic text that nobody remembers and that moves no deal. In this article you will read what each of the two really does well and badly, and how you, as a small B2B team, turn that into a content choice that strengthens your authority.

What does AI do well and what does AI do badly?

AI is fast. A chatbot writes an article in a fraction of the time a human needs. In tests, AI produces a first piece in a fraction of the time a human writer spends on it. That is a real gain, especially on the tedious preparatory steps.

What AI is good at:

  • Summarising research: scanning a topic quickly, gathering sources, listing angles.
  • Structure and outlines: proposing a logical build-up for an article or page.
  • First drafts: producing a rough version that you then cut into.
  • Processing data: organising and summarising the figures you supply.

Where AI structurally falls short is on the things that make the difference in B2B. AI often misses the context of the bigger picture: it writes 2,000 words on a complex subject, but rarely draws the connections an experienced reader finds useful. And it lacks emotion and lived experience. Buying decisions are more emotional than we admit; according to research by Gallup, roughly 70% of decisions, including brand preference, are based on emotional factors. A human who has worked in your market senses that. A model recalculating patterns does not.

Does a human really write better content than AI?

On what really matters, namely traffic and persuasive power over time: usually the human. In tests AI writes faster, but human content performed better on traffic in the long run. Where AI content often swings up and down, strong human content builds visitors steadily.

Do be critical of the stray “AI scores X% worse” figures doing the rounds online. Many of them come from one-off tests in a specific context, not from independent, repeated research. Treat such numbers as an indication, not as a law of nature. What they do illustrate well: speed is not the same as results. A piece that is finished faster but attracts and convinces nobody costs you more in the end.

The deeper reason lies in what Google steers on. Google’s helpful content guidelines call for content that shows real experience, expertise and a point of view of its own (see Google on helpful content); exactly the things an experienced human adds and an average AI text misses. Readers feel the difference too, by the way. Most people recognise generic AI text fairly easily by its flat, mechanical tone and the absence of a real opinion.

What does a human add that AI cannot?

Three things, and they are precisely the things that build trust in B2B.

Experience from practice. You know what really keeps a client in your sector awake, which objections always come back, which “best practice” does not work in reality. AI only knows what is already written somewhere.

An opinion. Good B2B content dares to choose: this we recommend, this we do not, and here is why. AI likes to average out to the safe middle. A point of view is exactly what sets you apart from the ten other articles on the same subject.

Original data and insight. A figure of your own, a case example, a conclusion from your own projects: a model cannot invent that, and it is precisely what others will link to and cite.

That does not rule out AI, it only determines where AI belongs: in the preparation, not in the final edit. If you want to dig deeper into that trade-off, read how to humanise AI content or how to deploy AI structurally in your B2B content marketing without damaging your brand.

How do you choose between AI and human as a B2B team?

Do not choose between the two, divide the roles. The practical rule: AI may accelerate, a human must decide and safeguard. Concretely:

  1. Let AI do the run-up. Research, an outline, a first rough draft. That is where you save time.
  2. Let a human add the insight. Your own experience, a clear opinion, an example from your own work.
  3. Check every fact and source by hand. AI regularly invents figures and quotes. In B2B, one wrong claim is enough to lose your credibility.
  4. Rewrite the tone yourself. Your brand voice and the subtlety with which you bring something do not come out automatically.
  5. Steer on the right number. Not “how many pieces per week”, but “which content moves our pipeline”. You can read more about that in measuring content marketing ROI.

That is our honest position too: AI content on autopilot looks cheap, but it gets found out and it costs you your authority. B2B is not a webshop where volume automatically turns into revenue; there, the party that persuades most wins, not the one that publishes most. Frequently asked questions

Does AI or a human write better B2B content? For pure speed, AI; for results, a human. In tests, human content generally draws more traffic over time and persuades better. The winning approach is a human with AI as a tool, not AI alone.

Does Google penalise AI content? Google does not penalise “AI” as such, but it does penalise content without real value. The helpful content guidelines reward experience, expertise and a point of view of your own. Generic AI text without that layer therefore scores poorly.

Can I use AI for a first draft? Yes, that is exactly a strong application. Let AI do the draft and the research, but add insight, opinion and fact-checking yourself before you publish.

Do readers recognise AI content? Often, yes. Most readers sense the flat tone and the absence of a real opinion. In B2B, where trust closes the deal, that is a real risk.
