Hero image

The large visual area at the top of a page that instantly sets the tone and leads the visitor to the main message and action.

By Tanguy De Keyzer · Founder & digital strategist

A hero image is the large visual area at the top of a page that instantly sets the tone and leads the visitor to the core message and action. It coincides with the above-the-fold area and is often the first thing someone sees, so it helps determine whether the visitor stays.

Why the hero is more than a pretty picture

A hero that looks good but says nothing costs you conversions. The image must support your promise, not drown it out. Strong heroes reinforce the headline, give context to the offer and keep the cta clearly visible. A busy stock image or a slow background video does the opposite: it distracts and slows down the page. On a landing page every second counts, so the hero should carry the message, not hide it.

What a strong hero does

The best heroes bring image and message together into one clear whole:

  • They support the headline instead of competing with it
  • They show relevant context, preferably real and recognizable
  • They keep text and button clearly readable over the image
  • They stay light enough to load quickly

For Customer Impact this is about B2B relevance: a decision-maker wants to recognize themselves in what they see, not in generic imagery. Honest and fitting works better than spectacular and empty.

How to make the hero perform

Choose imagery that confirms to the right visitor that they are in the right place, and always keep text and action visible, including on mobile. Watch weight and format, because a heavy hero affects your page speed and thus your core web vitals. If you are torn between variants, let behavior decide through a test and measure the effect on your conversion rate. That way the hero becomes a conversion element instead of decoration.

From theory to growth.

We turn Hero image into measurable results for your business.
